Pastor's Ponderings....

"Sabbatical Reflections, Part 1"

Thank you again for one of the greatest gifts of God’s love I have ever received. I will never forget my forty days and forty nights to renew myself in heart, soul, mind, and body. The Great Commandment from Deuteronomy 6 and the Gospels, Matthew 22, Mark 12, and Luke 10, was my theme for each day: loving God with all that I have and am and loving everyone else as I would want to be loved. I wrote 25 poems and 5 songs while on sabbatical. Two of the poems are printed below. The first is about recognizing God’s love for ourselves. The second has reflections on extending God’s love to others.

Sabbath Song

When the night is long as the wind was strong,
On that winter walk home, when my way went wrong,
God sings to me a Sabbath Song.
Then I sleep as deep as the song is sweet,
Like the smiles I meet when I find my way home,
God sings to me a Sabbath Song.
God said, "Let there be light," and it was good,
"Let there be love," and Adam stood,
God dreamed and danced on hills and sands,
Then sang a Sabbath Song.
Morning is new as the clear skies are blue,
As fresh as dawn's first dew,
When it rests on the lawn,
And God sings to me a Sabbath Song.
I yawn as deep as the shroud of night,
Like the daisies do with the dawn’s first light.
And I say to the day, "Whatever goes wrong,
I'm a stream flowing strong till I find my way home,"
And God sings to me a Sabbath Song.

The Aspen Tree

No matter how steep the stone hill where it grows,
The Aspen Tree reaches up to the sky.
No matter the snow or the wind or flood foes,
The branches stretch starward with leaves lifted high.
The blackbird is sure of the sturdy, gray branches,
The squirrel trusts the trunk on his sky-scraping climbs,
The butterfly laughs among leaves as she dances,
The beetle seeks shelter when summer resigns.
To branch-out with healing to those who are poorest,
To reach up to heaven, no matter the pain,
This is the reason we grow in this forest,
To rustle with love songs in windstorm and rain.

In Gratitude,
Pastor Steve

REFLECTIONS

The Riptide

Have you ever felt like your life is spinning out of control? There are so many things happening that it is hard to keep up. One look at the newspaper or the news on TV can remind us of enough situations in the world that can keep us busy worrying for long periods of time. This does not take into consideration the personal situations in which we feel overwhelmed

When we stop to think about all of these things, it would be easy to take a defeatist attitude. It all seems so overwhelming. Maybe that is because we have grown up with the idea that if we work hard enough we can resist the laws of nature. That if we use all the medical resources available, we can resist growing older. If we invest wisely we can ward off having to live with limited resources when we get older. Then pension plans disappear, hair falls out, joints creak and ache, and energy diminishes.

The irony of all this is that we can't change the laws of nature. Nature will take its course regardless of our efforts, we can't live in the past, we only have NOW. Learning to live in the moment is crucial to enjoying life.

Dr. Carlson's advice is,  "To surrender to our lack of control." We all want to feel secure about our future. We would all like our lives to be predictable, but in order to feel safe we have to give up.

He said life is like a riptide. It is impossible to fight a riptide. If you wish to survive, you have to yield to its power till it stops, then you can swim safely back to shore.

To surrender does not mean to allow ourselves to become victims, or to be passive, it means to acknowledge that the future is not on our shoulders. To live in the moment does not mean to compare this moment with those moments from the past. We can either retreat into the past because it is safe or enter the present moment and be open to what that particular moment is, regardless of the risks.

This philosophy has nothing to do with being a victim; it has to do with acknowledging the power of surrender, which allows our connection to God and his wisdom to shine through us.

                                                                                  Peace,
                                                                                     Duane

WHAT SHOULD WE BECOME?

A Proposal For
Mountain Vista United Methodist Church

Over the last two or three years, MVUMC has been working toward a major building cycle. A $3.6 million proposal presented to the congregation for consideration was approved and a fund-raising effort was authorized. It sometimes appears that nothing developed! Several people have been wondering: what happened to the plan? What happened to the fund-raising? Is anyone doing anything?

In the meantime, new people have joined and become active in the MVUMC family. They have spawned new ideas and questions, some of which have generated active discussion. Perhaps it is time for a new approach, a new process, and a challenge toward a new decision.

I believe that a church family is healthiest when all of its members are active in their communication with each other, especially about crucial issues. As in all family situations, there are few aspects of the organization that have more potential for disruption than difficult financial concerns. Taking another step into the morass, there are few financial concerns that are more serious and potentially burdensome than those surrounding building projects and any debt that might be attached to their implementation. This becomes obvious when even the small building committee struggles with the "What do we do?" question.

It appears that there are at least three proposals that have come under discussion:

     1.  Construct a new complex of buildings to be built closer to 90th South, perhaps in three phases. This is the proposal presented by the Building Committee and approved by the Church body over a year ago.

     2.  Rather than new buildings, construct an addition to the current building to include a series of classrooms and a large multi-purpose room. This proposal may include the proposed sale of approximately 6 acres of MVUMC land between the current parking lot line and 90th South.

     3.  Do nothing until we have a stronger base of financial commitment and support.

So, it appears that MVUMC is already in the midst of a building "situation." The situation has already progressed to the point where many different discussions are rumbling among the members of the church family. Most of the information being debated is either incomplete or incorrect, or both. Some people fear that they have not been or will not be heard before "someone" makes a "wrong" decision.

In this proposal, I am suggesting that we encourage a new tack: let's include all participants in the MVUMC congregation family in our discussions. Let's develop a best chance scenario for driving toward a more comprehensive participation before any further significant steps are taken. We may not be able to get a universal buy-in, but we may be able to make sure everyone feels engaged in the process of reaching a conclusion.

Many researchers use focus groups of 10-15 people to encourage genuine engagement of individuals in active discussions of critical topics. For example, major companies use these processes to determine whether or not new products or changes in established products might be successful in the marketplace. Political parties and candidates use these processes to develop and improve platforms. Civic groups use these processes to determine where they should focus their efforts and resources.

This proposal recommends the development of discussion groups using focus-group techniques that will potentially involve every person who is a member or active participant in the life and fellowship of Mountain Vista United Methodist Church. I suggest that we undertake the following techniques:

     1.  Divide size of the entire fellowship by 15.  I estimate that the result will be approximately 12.

     2.  Establish a number of group discussion sessions equivalent to the number discovered in #1.

     3.  Schedule the sessions in such a way that some are in both weekday and weekend mornings, afternoons, and evenings, so that there should be ample attendance options for all people of the church.

     4.  Invite all persons actively affiliated within the MVUMC family to request 3 choices of dates when they would be able to attend and participate in one of the scheduled sessions.

5.Attempt to place all of the MVUMC family into one of the sessions. We should also attempt to invite diversity of age, sex, session of church attendance, and so forth. In order to encourage active participation of all members of every group, it will be important to keep the size of each group as close to the target of 15 persons as possible.

In order to preserve symmetry and balance among all the groups, it will be very important that one or two persons attend every discussion. This recommendation suggests that I will be the leader of every discussion and that one other person will volunteer to attend every session and take appropriate notes so that significant discussion elements are not lost before they can be included in summary reports at the end of the project. Absent an additional volunteer, the proposal suggests that a tape recording of every discussion be maintained for reference.

Steps to be taken if/when this proposal is approved for implementation:

     1.  Develop a schedule of group meetings that will be used to complete the project.

     2.  Make a complete list of all MVUMC members and friends who are active in the life of the church. This list will become the basis for numeric calculations and evaluations as the project unfolds.

     3.  Search for a volunteer to assist me in the planning, group discussion meetings, and the summary evaluation documents that will be prepared as reports to the church family at the end of the project.

     4.  Write a brief explanation of the process and the reason why MVUMC is undertaking these steps. Place the explanation in an effective space within the regular monthly newsletter that is sent to every MVUMC church family member. It could also be included as a flier page in the Sunday morning bulletin.  Encourage EVERY member of the church family to participate.

     5.  Make announcements at every church service for one or two weeks to remind the church family about the project and to encourage every member to submit at least 3 date selections that will make it possible for assignment to the discussion group sessions.

     6.  At the end of a pre-determined sign-up period (probably 2 weeks), determine who has not submitted a selection request and try to complete the 100% participation goal with telephone or other personal contacts.

     7.  Notify participants of their selection to particular discussion groups and issue written invitations for their attendance.

     8.  For every discussion group session, prepare the session chambers with comfortable table and seating arrangements and appropriate refreshments and/or snacks.

     9.  Conduct the discussion group meetings. Each meeting should be help to a timeline of approximately 60 to 90 minutes so that there is a consistency across the range of groups.

    10.  Gather notes and/or tapes from all the group meetings and prepare summary and evaluative reports. Discuss these preliminary reports with the pastor and the chair of the MVUMC Administrative (Ad) Council in preparation for final presentation to the Ad Council.

    11.  Prepare summary information that can be released to the MVUMC church family and thank everyone for their participation and support.

    12.  Assist the Ad Council in delivering important information to the church family when next-step decisions and progress stages are made.

Grace and peace to everyone,

I spent sometime fishing with my Father and Zacory last month. We spent all morning in a small aluminum boat.

I didn't fish that day, I helped Zac and ran the trolling motor. We talked all morning, my Dad shared some stories of fishing when he was young. The coffee is especially good out on the lake early in the morning. Zac and I listened as he talked about fishing with his father. They were joking with each other. I had the best day in my life fishing and I never put line in the water. My nephew from Colorado was with us and my Dad has a way of talking with him that is remarkable, he is just real with him and he treats him like a person. They just open up, we talked about all kinds of things. Even things that were scary to young people like school or troubles. The boys had a great time talking and sharing. There were no age boundaries, we had a life in common, a goal in common. The experience level was never an issue. The wind came up and we headed in. We had to arrange the seating so the boys didn't get soaked. We had to angle for each wave and head in at it so we weren't vulnerable on the sides. Everything went great and we were back for a great breakfast.

I often think of you all and I did that day. You are the People in the boat with me or visa versa. We are Doing life together. We count on each other as we go. We arrange and move to care for each other. We encourage one another and celebrate success. Understand and encourage when things get away. Our Boat is Christ. He is our life in common, He is what holds us together. An eternity with him is our goal. We had to plan a lot to make sure we had all that was needed; bait, poles, licenses, fuel and great coffee. Do we plan for this goal as well as a fishing trip? I think we should prepare for this life with Christ. Are you equipped for the Big one? Up until I was in my thirties I knew more about the fishing regulations and bag limits than master Fisher of Men. It's never to late to start. Get into a Bible study or Sunday school class. If there are no bites, try a new lure like at the Christian bookstore. But be patient if the fishing's slow, don't rock the boat. Maybe you could just bait the hook and drive for a while. Maybe you have a fishing story to tell to a young fisherman or an old one. We have a new confirmation class starting. What a great way to encourage some young fishers.

"I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We’ll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, "Friends, haven’t you any fish?" "No," they answered. He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" (John 21)
