The Mountain View

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven on Earth.

Pastor's Ponderings....

Luke 18:1. Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

As Thanksgiving approaches, we sometimes have trouble finding something to be thankful for—especially if we are going through extremely difficult challenges. People lose much in life: Jobs, homes, money, friends, family, health. However, some of the gifts of God can never be lost or taken away. The blessings of prayer and perseverance are two of these. They are some of the intangible gifts which have more staying power than anything on earth.

When the career crashes…pray and never give up.
When the dollars dry up… pray and never give up.
When the relationship is ruined… pray and never give up.
When the sickness strikes… pray and never give up.
When the dear ones die… pray and never give up.
When the towers tumble… pray and never give up.
When the war wearies the world…pray and never give up.
When the dream dies… pray and never give up.

How do we continue faithfully in prayer and perseverance? It is very difficult to do in isolation.

  • We need others to remind us of the needs for prayer and to be able to pray for us.
  • We need others to remind us there is still good in the world.
  • We need others to show us the many opportunities for making the good happen in the world.
  • We need others to help us wrestle with God's Word for our lives.

Worship, Bible Study, Prayer/Support Groups, and Service are vital to prayer and perseverance. Read this newsletter carefully to find out what is available at Mountain Vista, and I'll see you Sunday!

Grace & Peace,
Pastor Steve

REFLECTIONS

(Duane wrote the following article for the newsletter in 2005. It seemed appropriate to reprint it since Duane has been in the hospital and in our prayers.)

Reach Out and Touch

A common phrase used a few years ago was, "Let your fingers do the walking." This referred to the yellow pages of the phone book where we could find the phone number we needed. Now we don't even have to find a phone directory if we have the number listed in our phone log. We can just pick up our cell phones, push the button, or ask our phone to dial the number for us.

I certainly can't argue with the fact that our ability to establish contact is much easier today than it has been in the past. In seconds we can be speaking to someone clear across the country or even across the ocean. But do we let this ease take the place of real communication? Do we at times take this convenience for granted and forget about the need to communicate with others and with our Maker?

The story is told about my grandfather, Jacob Haidle who farmed in eastern Montana during the years 1910-1917. At one point during that time he became very sick and the usual home remedies had no effect upon his illness. There were no doctors or hospitals in the area. In desperation he had one of his sons take him to the nearest railroad station about six miles away. He boarded the eastbound train and traveled to Bismarck, North Dakota to see a doctor. (Approx. 250 miles) He was placed in the hospital where he underwent surgery for appendicitis. He was kept in the hospital six weeks before being released. Meanwhile his wife and family had no idea whether he was alive and if so, what kind of medical problems he was suffering. It was not until the family saw him walking down the hill above their farm did they know he was alive and well. Imagine the joy and excitement on that day!

Long before telephones were invented God had told humankind that He was always available, whenever they wanted to talk to Him. Isn't it great that God has promised us that we can always trust him to be there whatever the problem or situation. We do not have to dial the right number, have the right connection, or worry about the right long distance service. The line is never busy, not working or too expensive. We don't have to ask, "Can you hear me now?" God Is There! He is ever present and wants to commune with us, just like when He came down to the Garden of Eden to fellowship with Adam and Eve. We may not have face-to-face contact, but we do have the witness of His spirit communing with our spirit, a sense of comfort, peace and love, which can only come from having been in the presence of God.

Peace,
Duane

Lay Leader Letter

It is here again! The time of holidays. It starts with Halloween and ends with New Years Day. I love this time of year and I also can get crazy spending more money than I should. I have to admit that I struggle with Halloween. I had read some stuff about that led me to feel I was not honoring Jesus by participating in an event with so many un-Christian things. Also, all the ties to occult, satanic things and harm to kids, have given this holiday a bad rap. When I was a kid my Mom said we could dress up as anything we wanted except, a devil/demon or a witch. I have kept that rule in my house (sometimes parents are right just because). A couple years ago God gave me a new perspective on some stuff including Halloween. We have changed or conquered things through Christ to improve Life

Halloween night in some cultures used to be a when people did kooky things, hurt or killed others as a sacrifice as part of their beliefs. Now we as Disciples of Christ have taken this holiday and we can celebrate the conquering of death and “fear not” in and through Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:54-55 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”

Instead of human sacrifice, we give out candy, laugh and celebrate these scary things.
Christmas had its origins in celebrating winter solstice in Rome and other cultures. Someone decided to celebrate the Birth of Christ instead of a really short day.

Romans 1:25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen

Thanksgiving was just that, giving thanks to the provider and creator of all things.

Colossians 1:15-17 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

If Disciples of Christ can change complete holidays and start new ones, we can change anything. Where do you see a need for change in your home, in your job place in your neighborhood and world? Through prayer and purposeful, patient focus we can do anything in Christ name for his Glory.

Ephesians 3:7-13 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of his power. Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the un-searchable riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose, which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

I am going to ask you to do a little home work now try it in your own words write the down what Jesus told his Disciple to do in these passages Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16-15, Luke 24:47, John 20:21 and Acts 1:8. Try it and see what change is in store for your world.

YBIC

November 11th - 12:30 p.m. Church Charge Conference for Building Project Authorization:
Mountain Vista will be hosting an all Church Charge Conference and Potluck Lunch on Sunday afternoon, November 11th at 12:30. The purpose of the Charge Conference is to obtain approval for starting a building project to add a second building to the Mountain Vista campus that will be utilized to support our growth. The goals that the building committee have been working are to provide a gathering/fellowship area, additional class rooms, additional parking, and to build on the North section of our property. The presentation will include the following: a) a preliminary architectural plan; b) a preliminary cost estimate; c) a preliminary financial plan; and d) the building committee's recommendation. A church vote is needed to authorize the building project, and to authorize the building committee to serve in the development of the project.

The potluck will start at 12:30 following the 11:15 morning service. The main course (deep fried turkey) for the potluck lunch will be provided by the Church Council. Everyone is asked to bring a potluck dish to share. We would like to have as many people attend as possible. This is a major crossroads for setting the future direction of our church and everyone's input is desired. We hope to see you there.

This church conference is focused specifically on the building project authorization, and does not replace the Annual Conference that is scheduled for December 2nd at 6:00 p.m.

Saturday, December 8th from 8 a.m. -3 p.m.
Santa’s CHRISTMAS COOKIE Shop and Boutique
It is time once again for our annual Christmas Cookie Sale. Formerly known as a "cookie walk," this is a bake sale where cookies and candies are sold by the pound. The buyer walks around a group of tables filled with platters of cookies, candies, pastries, breads, choosing his/her own assortment and placing them in a box, which is weighed when the buyer is done. There will also be a variety of crafts available and a wall hanging to be raffled.

This event will take place on Saturday, December 8, 2007 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Building Fund.

We are in need of lots of donated cookies and candies. We are asking people to donate in multiples of at least 3 dozen per type of cookie or candy. The sign up clipboard will be available outside the office area. We would like all kinds of cookies (no chocolate chip, please) with different textures and colors. Cookies/candies that sell best are "pretty" and small to medium in size and not gooey ones that stick to everything else in the box or cake like products. Pull out your favorite recipes for cookies, candies, breads, etc. and get to planning. Please bring your goodies to the church on a cookie platter or in a Tupperware container (remember to put your name on all containers), Friday, December 7th between 4 and 7 p.m. so we can set everything up the night before. If you have craft items to donate, bring them at this time also.

How can you help even more? Come to the event on Saturday and tell all your friends, neighbors, and relatives about the event so they can come and buy all the cookies/candies they will need for the holidays. These boxes of goodies are a great idea to take to the office, give to neighbors, and relatives.

Gift certificates will be available for purchase in early November. A $5.00 gift certificate gets your friend 1 lb. of goodies. Hopefully when they come in to redeem it, they will also add to it.
We look forward to seeing you on December 7, to deliver and December 8, to buy, making this event a great success!

Sandwich Ministry or Miracle Whip
Again, sandwiches materialized from the Mountain Vista UMC congregation to feed the hungry of downtown Salt Lake. As usual, I pulled up to the St. Vincent DePaul Center and volunteers from the center came out to help unload the sandwiches. The comment I delighted to hear was, "Oh yeah, these are the GOOD sandwiches! Where are you from? Yeah, the Methodists make good sandwiches." And, I must say they are gorgeous every month.

Somebody this month found loaves of sandwich bread that are two pounds apiece. The sandwich goodies inside were nutritious, fresh, and plentiful. These sandwiches were not the exception. In addition, some were given the extra fancy bagged individually, decorated with sharpie artwork, and placed in refrigerator loader type soda boxes, complete with lettuce in each sandwich. Wow. What a kindness. Diners at the center chose those first, just because they looked friendly.
November sandwich day will be the 19th, it's the Monday before Thanksgiving. As always, the green sandwich clipboard will be in the rack by the door. God is smiling at your efforts and desires to serve.

WALK TO EMMAUS
Come "walk" with Christ.

The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual walk, not a physical walk. There is no hiking or marathon walk involved. Bring your slippers and Bible, not your walking shoes.

The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The program's approach seriously considers the model of Christ's servanthood and encourages Christ's disciples to act in ways appropriate to being "a servant of all."

The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with a 72-hour short course in Christianity, comprised of fifteen talks by lay and clergy on the themes of God's grace, principles of Christian discipleship, and what it means to be the church. The course is wrapped in prayer and meditation, special times of worship, music and daily celebration of Holy Communion. The Walk continues after these 3 days, with 4th day reunion groups and quarterly gatherings.

The Upper Room, a ministry unit of the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church, sponsors the Walk to Emmaus and offers it through local Emmaus groups around the world. Although connected through The Upper Room to The United Methodist Church, The Walk to Emmaus is ecumenical.

Walk to Emmaus dates:
Men's Walk: February 21-24, 2008
Women's Walk: February 28 -March 2, 2008

Applications are now being accepted!
Check with the church office for applications.
