Pastor's Ponderings....

"Ministering to the Minister"

Tracy, Shane, Scott and I have experienced, once again, in a very powerful way, just how beautiful it is to belong to a community of faith that lives the faith. The cards, e-mails, phone calls, kind words, hugs, empathetic tears, meals brought in, and gifts before and after Tracy's mom passed away have been overwhelming. We have wondered over and over again how people who do not have an extended family of faith get through times like this—or any other time, for that matter! In some ways, I still have trouble getting used to the idea that the minister and family would be ministered to in such beautiful ways. I am supposed to minister to YOU! But, you know, since I have been with Mountain Vista I have gotten more and more used to the idea!

But God has combined the members of the body… so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. –1 Corinthians 12:24-27

We are all a part of the Body of Christ with many and varying gifts and graces, and you remind me every day that Christ is alive and well in the world.

On the street I saw a small girl, cold and shivering in a thin dress, with little hope of a decent meal. I became angry and said to God: Why do you permit this? Why don’t you do something about it? For a while, God said nothing. Then that night, God replied quite suddenly: "I certainly did do something about. I made you." –Mother Theresa

Grace & Peace,
Pastor Steve

REFLECTIONS

Being a Winner
I Samuel 17: 17-52

Our society places a great deal of emphasis on being successful or in other words, being a winner. The biggest problem with this philosophy is that there is no clear definition of what being a winner means. Is it he/she who has the most toys, the biggest house, the biggest bank account, or even having the most power physically or politically?

David faced such an issue when he went to provide food for his brothers. The whole army was stopped because of a giant named Goliath. Max Lucado points out that the problem was not the question of facing Goliath, the problem was that Saul and his army were looking at Goliath and not looking at God. They were at a standstill because they had lost their focus. David's first question was to ask why God's army was being held up by one man. You know the story, David goes out to meet Goliath and faces him with a slingshot. Only a fool would do that, right?

William Barclay points out that, "A man is connected with God, not because he is a member of a nation or a tribe, but because he is a person." He goes on to say that through this connection an individual and God can survive any national trial or disaster. Even though David was seen as a rosy-cheeked youth, he had learned that it was not the strength of the army, or his own strength, it was through his connection with God that the battle would be won.

Some place their values on possessions and power, i.e.; Goliath's strength and his equipment. However Goliath could not match the power of God. The Bible teaches us the real winner is the one who has discovered a relationship with God. It isn't because of a connection with people, political power, massive armies, or possessions. The winner is one who has discovered his/her relationship with God. It is a personal relationship, not a relationship of association.

When life ends, it is not the possessions, political position and power, being a member of a race, or a church that matters. What will make you a winner is a relationship with God!

Peace
Duane

Lay Leader Letter

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as I forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

This prayer comes from Jesus' teaching found in Matthew 6:9-13 and in Luke 11:2-4.

I realize that there have been times when I said this prayer and it was just words, that I hadn't engaged my heart or mind in the prayer. Over the next few months I would like to focus each month on a different portion of this prayer that Jesus taught us to pray with the hopes that the prayer would become as meaningful to each of us as it was to Jesus Christ.

Hallowed be thy Name—Why does the Lord's Prayer contain the phrase, "Hallowed be your name"? The phrase follows the opening of the prayer, which directly addresses God, so we know that the phrase means that God's name should be hallowed. When we review the dictionary definition of hallowed, we can understand why God should be hallowed, but why should His name be hallowed?

Let's look at it against the background of the Old Testament's idea that the name of God is something in itself immensely beautiful and powerful. The name of God is God's word, God's presence.

("In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God." John 1:1)

To ask that God's name be hallowed, that God's name be looked upon as holy, is to ask that in the world people will understand the presence of God among them with awe and reverence, and will not use the name or the idea of God as a kind of weapon to put other people down, or as a sort of magic to make themselves feel safe. But rather approach the idea of God, the name of God, the word of God, with veneration and humility.

In the Jewish texts of Jesus' own day, the commandment about not taking God's name in vain, from the Ten Commandments, is often understood as uniting the name of God with a curse—using the name of God as a kind of magic word—and that's to trivialize the name of God, it's to bring it down to our level, to try and make God a tool for our purposes.

So "Hallowed be thy name" means: to understand what you're talking about when you're talking about God, this is serious, this is the most wonderful reality that we could imagine. This is God's Majesty!

The sanctification of his name among the nations depends inseparably on our life and our prayer:

We ask God to hallow his name, which by its own holiness saves and makes holy all creation.... It is this name that gives salvation to a lost world. But we ask that this name of God should be hallowed in us through our actions. For God's name is blessed when we live well, but is blasphemed when we live wickedly. "We ask then that, just as the name of God is holy, so we may obtain his holiness."

When we say "hallowed be thy name," we ask that it should be hallowed in us, who are in him; but also in others whom God's grace still awaits, that we may obey the precept that obliges us to pray for everyone, even our enemies. That is why we do not say expressly "hallowed be thy name in us," for we ask that it be so in all men.

We pray, "Hallowed be your name."
We confess that you are holy, and you want to reshape our lives to reflect Your holiness. Guide us day by day, and renew our hearts, so that not just our words but our lives will bring honor and glorify your name. Amen.

See you in church, Grace and Peace- deb

BROADWAY!

Local Production Rocks the Love Boat
West Jordan, Utah (March 7, 2008) – Robert is a reporter assigned to take a cruise and write an article about love and all its aspects. He's pretty skeptical about this assignment, due to his unhappy history with romance. Little does he know, he will be traveling on the Atlantic Atlantis (a.k.a. "The Love Boat") where all types of interesting things happen. On the cruise he meets Lucy, a beautiful young woman; Aunt Claire, a wealthy divorcee; and many other intriguing guests.

"Set Sail with Broadway" is a fun and frivolous musical production that brings together a group of more than 70 community actors form all over the Salt Lake valley. Members of Mountain Vista United Methodist Church, along with many other community actors, have put in hundreds of hours of work to create and an exciting musical production. The show includes lots of kids and it is a great family event.

This year's event will be the first three weekends in May and will host more than 1500 people at the show. The shows will be performed at Mountain Vista United Methodist Church at 8931 South and 3200 South in West Jordan on May 2, 3, 9 and 10 (7 p.m.), and May 18 (2 p.m. matinee) and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 9000 S. 2901 W. in West Jordan on May 16 and 17 (7 p.m.)

Shows typically sell out, so you need to get your tickets in advance. Prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children (10 and under). Tickets are on sale now by calling 280-4148

Testimonials about Mountain Vista United Methodist Church Broadway Productions!!!

"I've been to every one of Mountain Vista's Broadway shows and have really enjoyed them. I look forward to going to them every time one comes around. Not because Tracy is my daughter, but everyone is so talented. I enjoy how it all comes together. It's amazing how the writers pull all the musical numbers together in the script."

"WoW!" I remember the words my husband used after seeing our first MVUMC Broadway show.
He could not believe and neither could I, how professional and entertaining a small church group in West Jordan could be. We have been to the last 3 shows and they get better each time.
We can't wait to see the show this year!

Doc and I attended "Three Weddings and a Potluck" on our second date. The music was so creative and the cast amazingly talented. When it came time to choose the place for our own wedding Doc suggested Mt Vista because the "Three Weddings" experience had been so real, and wonderful, for us.

We have seen all the musicals that Pastor Steve and Tracy have produced, and even performed in some of them in Cedaredge, Colorado. Since they have been at Mountain Vista Church in West Jordan, we have never missed a show, and went to several twice. The enthusiasm, joy, and talent displayed by the casts (from tiny tots to senior citizens) makes this the best bargain in entertainment you will find anywhere. We'll make our usual 600+ round trip this Spring, because we know this will be another great show!

I thought the last Broadway was very well done. It was awesome because even the kids could understand what was going on in the show. The props were even well done. It truly looked like a professional had put it on. The other good part was that it raised a ton of money for the church building fund. I haven't really heard what this year's is going to be about but I am positive that It well be equal to or better than the last. The actors and actresses did very well.

Abbie Siex age 13

Among the many blessings we enjoy at Mountain Vista, is having our own in resident, Broadway producer and director, Tracy Reinhard and company. My first introduction to Mountain Vista United Methodist Church's Broadway show was at the LDS church on 9000 south, Mountain Vista's first Utah show with barely one third of its present membership.

After the second production in 2002 (held in our new church building), I was hooked on the exceptional talent, the fun, and especially the sincere, spiritual fellowship of the congregation. I joined this church that same year.

Don't miss this remarkable cast and support troupe in May in their fifth, exciting performance of excellence.

In addition to Broadway, Pastor Steve Reinhard and his very capable, well-rounded ministry have much to offer (all ages) those who are looking for a great church family.

Now, on with the show! "Set Sail for Broadway!"

Building Plan approved!!
There were 48 in attendance and all 48 voted either in a "member" capacity or "friends" capacity. There were 47 votes "YES" and 1 vote "abstaining", 0 "NO" votes. Yeah!

HAMMER TIME
From the Building Committee:
As you have heard, we are going ahead with the next phase of our building. I am so excited! This committee began in February of 2007 it has had a few folks come and go but I commend them for their patience and perseverance, and you too. Now we have just a bit more waiting as we await the blessings of West Jordan City in obtaining permits. Please pray for our City planners and building permit personnel and also for the people at Gough construction. Prayer is the most important thing we can do.

Your Builder in Christ,
Cory Coward
P.S. Also don't be afraid to use your economic stimulus check on the building, it is tax deductible. WOW! Build the Kingdom and help the economy. God is Good all the time!

Dr. Robert (Bob) Nohavec Retires as Mountain Vista Choir Director

Staff Parish Relations Committee invites you to celebrate the ministry of Bob Nohavec. Bob has been our choir director since January of 2002. May 25, 2008, Bob will direct his final anthem as the MVUMC Chancel Choir Director. Bob has been a stellar director and an incredible blessing not only to our choir but also to our entire church community. Bob's dedication and commitment are two of his greatest assets.

When it comes to directing a choir Bob Nohavec doesn't "let you breathe," or is it "miss a beat"? Either way, he will be much missed.

To honor and thank Bob for his time and commitment, we are planning a retirement "Roast" and potluck dinner, Sunday, June 8, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. Every one has a "Bob" story, so come and share yours! Please join us in thanking this wonderful servant and friend!!!

He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. - Psalm 40:3

Mountain Vista to Help Stock The Shelves in July!!!!

Crossroads is experiencing skyrocketing numbers of clients. In February 2008 we served 40% more people than February 2007; our March numbers were up 44%. April is on the same track. We usually have enough food to get us through half the summer and take food donation money and fill in the gaps in August. We have already tapped into that money to buy food and fill gaps in March. Thus our worry about getting through the summer. Any month, any help with a food drive will be greatly appreciated and be the answer to our prayers.

Items Crossroads is out of:

RICE!
Dry beans
Canned fruit
Peanut butter
Macaroni and Cheese
Beverages - juice, sports drinks, juice boxes
Snacks - granola bars, raisins, chips etc.
Canned meat - Spam, chicken, corned beef

Operation Christmas Child

Again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the wonderful response to Operation Christmas Child. The over 100 boxes provided through Mountain Vista United Methodist Church became part of 7.6 million boxes sent to children all over the world. 4.6 million boxes were prepared with love from churches, individuals, families, schools, and civic groups within the United States.

The newest addition to receiving the love from the boxes sent through Operation Christmas Child is China. Although evangelism is prohibited in this country, the shoebox gifts have been allowed as part of a cultural exchange program. The reports from this year’s distribution is that children were amazed, excited, and so appreciative of these gift that they could feel were given with love.
I am anxious to have another successful year of shoebox giving through Mountain Vista UMC. It is never too early to think about how you or a group in which you are involved may become an active part of this wonderful opportunity.
Thanks again, Lesa

Congratulations to all Webelos Cub Scouts for their accomplishments and crossing over to the Boy Scouts. Welcome boys and parents to Troop #1012.

Build me a Scout, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory....Build me a Scout whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a Scout who himself is the foundation stone of knowledge....Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail...... Build me a Scout whose heart will be clear, whose goals will be high. A Scout who will master himself before he seeks to master others., one who will march into the future, yet never forget the past....And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself so seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.... Then I, a Scouter who knew him, will dare whisper, "I have not lived in vain."

Thank you for the Support!

YOUTH

Hello Mt Vista!

April has been a very exciting month for our youth. We recently had a chance to go Laser Tagging. It was a great time. All the youth had awesome code names such as: Wolf, Jorge, Barbie just to name a few.

We also just recently hosted our second annual talent show at Mt Vista. We had seven very talented acts that ranged from singing, dancing, clogging, Piano, and Guitar. We were able to raise right around $100 for our youth through the show. That money will specifically go to help kids that will be attending missions this year (either to Mexico or Montana). Thank you very much to the parents, friends, and other relatives that came out to support our awesome youth!! We shall soon be planning another outing to go paint balling. I will keep people in touch about that in the near future.

I know there are some parents and kids whose e-mail's I still don't have. E-mail is my primary way to keep all of you updated on what is happening with the youth program here at Mt. Vista. If you would like to send me your e-mail so I can place it in my directory, that would be great!!
My E-Mail is: J_Train007@hotmail.com (please include your name and whose parents you are!)
I also want all of you to know what my specific office hours are here at the church. This can helpful for anyone who would like to schedule a time to talk or visit with me!

Mon: 1 pm to 6 pm
Tues: 1 pm to 6 pm
Wed: 2 pm to 8 pm
Thurs: off
Fri: 1 pm to 6 m

Once again thank you for all of your support!!
God Bless!
