Pastor's Ponderings....
May It Be a Great '08
Thanks to Brandee Fox for sharing the following story with me:
It was the day AFTER Christmas at a church in San Francisco, the pastor of
the church was looking at the manger scene, when he noticed that the baby
Jesus figure was missing from the cradle. He immediately turned and went
outside and saw a little boy with a red wagon walking down the street. And in
the wagon, was the figure of the infant Jesus. So he walked up to the boy and
said, "Son, where did you get that little baby Jesus that's in you wagon?"
The little boy replied, "I got him from the church."
"And why did you take him?" asked the pastor.
The little boy replied, "Well, about a week before Christmas, I prayed, and
I told Jesus if he would bring me a red wagon for Christmas, I would give him
a ride in it!"
Have you reviewed your blessings from God over the year 2007 - the food, the
fun, the family, the friendships, the fellowship of our church family? How will
you respond in gratitude for God's love present with us through the Spirit of
Jesus Christ? May Jesus' love shine through you as you love the lonely, the
lost, the least, the last, and the left-out in 2008.
Happy New Year!
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Steve

Building Fund Drives

The 2007 Mountain Vista Building
Committee has initiated 2 building fund drives that now under way. The
purpose of these fund drives is to raise money to increase our down
payment for the new church addition, and to reduce the monthly mortgage
payments that will be needed for sustainment.
Building Drive #1: Building
Material Giving Tree Campaign Goal: $10,000
The Building Tree Fund Drive
provides an opportunity to share the joy of holiday giving with the
Church. The Building Tree (Christmas Tree) will be located in the
Sanctuary and will be adorned with 300 tags listing building material
items needed for the construction of the new building along with an
approximated price of that item. The tags range in value from $10 - $500.
To participate in this fund drive,
simply remove a tag or tags from the tree, write your name on the tag(s),
place the tag(s) in a giving envelope with your cash or check for the
amount on the tag(s), and return the donation envelope to the Building
Tree Collection Box located next to the tree. All tags must be returned by
December 30th.
Building Drive #2: Special
Recognition Fund Drive Campaign Goal: $25,000
One of the greatest satisfactions in
making a charitable gift is the opportunity to pay tribute to someone who
has touched you in a significant way. The Special Recognition Building
Fund Program enables a supporter to provide a one-time commemorative gift
to the building fund that is in Honor of or in Memory of another person.
Through such a gift, you may honor a relative and perpetuate your family
name, or you may recognize a mentor or friend who has greatly shaped your
life. At the same time, your gift expresses your own commitment to the
future of your community and provides valuable support for the church.
Gifts may be given in any amounts of
$500 or more. A Special Recognition wall plaque will be placed in the
Fellowship Hall of the new building identifying the people recognized.
Simply pick up a Special Recognition Gift Card, fill it out, and return it
to the Special Recognition Donation Box. Cards must be returned by January
30th. Donations must be returned by April 30th.

NOTES FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTEE
-
The 2008 Pledge Drive was successful! Members of our MVUMC family presented 45
pledges that added up to nearly $30,000 more in committed support for the
church's General Fund than we counted in 2007. To those who submitted their
pledges, "THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR FAITH IN MVUMC!"
-
The 2008 Pledge Drive also resulted in $44,000 for the Building Fund. This
reflects an increase of more than $42,000 over the 2007 Building Fund pledges.
This is a wonderful statement of support for the new building progress that is
moving into its final stages of design.
-
This year, we had 17 new pledges and 13 increased pledges! Way to go, folks!
-
To meet the church’s $218,500 budget for 2008, we can still use several more
commitments; it is not too late to drop a pledge card into the offering plate or
to the church office.
-
Remember, the tax year ends on December 31st! Make your year-end contributions
before December 31st to ensure the deductibility of your gifts.
Donating Stock and Saving Taxes
Did you know that if you own stock that has appreciated in value, you can donate
it to the church (or other non-profit charity), take a deduction for the full
market value, and not have to pay tax on the capital gains? For example, let's
say you bought stock for $500 and it is now worth $1,000. If you sell it and
donate the money to the church, you would have a $500 capital gain and a $1,000
charitable deduction. If you donate the stock directly, you still get the $1,000
deduction, but you avoid the $500 capital gain. One restriction – you have to
have owned the stock at least one year. With the current push to raise money for
the new building, this might be a good source for funds to help out. For more
details, contact Jerry Selbo at 282-1268.
REFLECTIONS
It's a New Day!
2 Corinthians 5:16-19 (NIV) This is the time! This is the time to turn
over a new leaf! It's a new year, a new chance, a chance to start over. It is
time to let the old year with all its problems and worries fade into the past.
Easier said than done, right? It's hard to forget past errors, bad decisions,
past conflicts and world problems. We just get past the big celebration of the
New Year and then we are reminded that we now owe the government money for
whatever success we might have had during the past year. Sometimes it seems as
though there is a conspiracy out there to keep us from moving on to a new
beginning with a new perspective about life. The memory of failed New Years
resolutions in the past does not provide inspiration that would encourage us to
make more resolutions. Yet it is a New Year! How can we not look to the new
year without a feeling of optimism. This optimism does not come from political
promises, financial hopes, or physical health. It comes from the promise given
in the Bible. Promises that tell us we are new creations through Christ. (2 Cor.
5:17) We are told to forget the past, and to move on to the new life before us.
Letting past mistakes and problems cloud our vision can hinder us from the good
things God has promised. God has reconciled our past through Christ, can we
reconcile our past? Can we move on into the new day with hope, anticipation and
confidence?
God has given us his promise. Can we claim this promise and move forward with
this assurance? Is this the new years' resolution that is the most important and
life changing decision that we face? A Blessed New Year to all.
Peace
Duane
2007 Lay Leader Letter I watched my two
children and realized they learned from watching me. I must learn from Jesus.
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house
and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. (Mark 1:35) Lord, protect
us from a general mood of lethargy, from becoming tired, exhausted,
disappointed, bitter, resentful, or simply bored. Protect us from the world that
victimizes us by its compulsions. Transform us so we do not become or remain
victims of our society and entangled in illusions of a false self, basing our
worth on the world's values rather than your values. Remodel us in your own
image, Lord, and free us from the victimizing compulsions of the world. Protect
us from living the whole of our life as one long defense against the reality of
our condition. Instead let us be victorious in the struggle to die to the
world's false self. Keep us aware that we cannot do this on our own, and remind
us that only you can overcome these powers of evil. Especially keep us from
temptations to a comfortable self-centeredness and despair. Keep us from
modeling ourselves on the behavior of the world around us. Instead, fill us with
Yourself, Your truth and fruit, so our behavior changes, modeled by your mind,
and so we discover your will and know what is good, what you want, and the
perfect thing to do and say. Lord, let us fulfill our need for affirmation in
you and your truth, rather than in the world's. Especially keep us from lust,
anger, self-pity and greed. With Your divine power, demolish these enemies of
our soul, Lord. Bring us often to that holy place where in serving you, ministry
and spirituality embrace each other. Thank You that whether or not we turn to
You, You are always beside us. Cause us to be aware of your constant and
faithful presence with us. Keep our eyes and mind on you. Give us the grace
necessary to face our sin and leave it at the foot of your cross. Bring us to
your place of healing, where we can examine our wounds, stop clinging to our
fears, face our true nature, and experience the freedom we have as your
children, beloved and desired. Lord, may we be like you to our children – a
loving refuge and a source of strength, forgiveness, encouragement and wisdom,
and so draw our children to intimacy and solitude with you. Jesus, cause us to
withdraw from society each day, shake off our compulsions, and dwell in your
gentle healing presence. Let us hear your voice Jesus and keep us from ever
trusting in our own righteousness. Keep us from the sin of worry, from worrying
about our past or future. Lord, control our tongues eyes and our stomachs. Save
us indeed, and make us so radiant with your love, that we seek to serve a world
that needs you. Lord, give us your wisdom and insight to diagnose the hearts of
the people you have brought into our lives, and offer them your insight, comfort
and consolation. Make us truly compassionate by giving us your compassion.
Lord Jesus give us the courage to respond in pure honest love with your children
when they have not broken the yoke of this world's values Give us the inner
disposition, though it is hard, to be with others to the place where they are
weak, vulnerable, lonely or broken and to stop judging them, and evaluating
them, which creates distance. Lord, cause us to become free to be compassionate.
Mold us into gentle, caring, forgiving persons fully aware of our great
sinfulness and God's even greater mercy, so that our lives themselves become
ministry, a ministry where there is hardly any difference left between doing and
being. Make us compassionate because we are deeply aware of our solidarity in
brokenness with all of humanity, and make us ready and able to reach out to
anyone in need. Jesus, let us be so full of your merciful presence; we can do
nothing other than minister because our whole being witnesses to the light that
has come into our lives. Give us the humble pleasure of concluding our lives in
total absorption in you, where all our needs are meet in you. Be near me Lord.
AMEN Thank You allowing me to serve you these past Two years.

2008 Lay Leader Letter It was a beautiful spring morning in 2003. The little rock church on 32nd street
had stirred my curiosity. Like a magnetic force each day as I drove past this
building on my way home from work calling me to visit. About 2 weeks before
Easter, (I was a renowned "CEO"-Christmas and Easter Only Christian) my
curiosity got the best of me and I decided to give it a try. Being the
professional church hopper that I was, I knew to come a few minutes late so I
could sneak in, sit in the back and leave early. I remember hearing for the
first time that "God doesn't love anybody more than he loves me." Looking back
to that warm spring day, little did I know how much my life would change! That
day was the beginning of a lifetime of friendships with people who have taught
me about God's love, by being that love, showing kindness, acceptance and
encouraging me to step out of my comfortable seat in the back of the church and
use the talents and gifts that God has given me to Glorify God. I have been
places and done things I would only have dreamed of but would never have had the
courage to do without your love and support and encouragement. Things like;
singing a solo in a cantata, facilitating Wednesday evening services and Bible
studies, going on mission trips to Mexico, praying out loud, helping to lead
worship, dancing and singing and helping to write Broadway shows, preaching from
the pulpit. My life has taken on a life of it's own. You could say my life has a
purpose. I have learned that Purpose means knowing who we are in Christ and what
He has done for us, then acting out our relationship and redemption by being
obedient to God's will (Joyful obedience) It is the pursuit of God so God
becomes the driving force, inspiration, motivation, and reason for all we do in
life. That is, we devote our life, character, virtue, Spiritual Gifts,
abilities, and call so the best can be realized in all people and all
situations. The meaning of life is not about career, money, or power; it is
about relationships and developing character. Proverbs 19:21- says "Many are the
plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails."
The reason I tell you this, is that you would know, that it is with great
gratitude and love that I will humbly serve you as your Lay leader.
The primary task of the Lay Leader is:
To gather the hopes and concerns of your congregation and community; plan with
others to address some of these; recommend these plans to the appropriate
administrative bodies and leadership; and actively participate in and support
such programs so that your community may become more loving and just.
My hope is that somehow, in some way I would be able to give back a small
portion of what I have been given, that I would help each of you to live your
life with a purpose. That you would know who you are in Christ and that you
would know that God doesn’t love anybody more than God loves you!
Your humble servant in Christ,
debi
A Note from the Trustees We want to take this time to thank every one who has been helping with the
cleaning. We are in need of cleaners as we start to put together the new
schedule for 2008. Some of the people who have done it for so many years would
like to rotate off with the next year's schedule. Our goal is to get at least 4
on every week and presently it is on a 5-6 week rotation. For that many it only
takes about 1-11/2 hours to clean. Please think about it and let us know. There
is a clipboard for sign up at church. Some people have suggested we hire out the cleaning but our budget only allows
so much and we think the money should go toward keeping the sidewalks and
parking lot clean, sanded/salted for the winter. We feel this is a liability
issue that needs priority and too difficult to maintain 24/7. As always we
appreciate your input.

Letter from the Bishop:
Concerning the shooting in Arvada and Colorado Springs.
Our hearts hurt for those impacted by the recent events at the Youth with a
Mission Center in Arvada and New Life Church in Colorado Springs. We pray for
the families devastated by the loss of their loved one. We pray for those
wounded in and by these events. We pray for the people who attend these
ministries. We pray for the security person at the church that took the gunman's
life in order to save others. And we lift up prayers for the family and friends
of the gunman killed at the church.
Events such as these are always hard to understand. They have become all too
common especially in places where people gather in our communities. In response
it would be easy to begin to shut doors to the stranger, but that is not our
way. May we continue to strive to maintain our churches as places of sanctuary
and not as fortress. When events such as these breed fear, we must trust that
our faith will overcome such fear. God's love will be present to overcome the
reality of such brokenness.
It is our hope that persons with this level of pain or outrage might find
healthy outlets and healing to prevent incidents such as these. At this time we
do not know the gunman’s motive in either of these episodes; but we pray that
others who contemplate striking out in violence may seek and find appropriate
counsel before this kind of tragedy happens again. As we move forward, our hope and trust remains in God. Through our faith we
will, continue to carry out Christ’s ministry to the least, last and lost. We
will do this with courage and conviction.
May God bring comfort and peace to all those affected by these tragedies.
Sincerely
Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr.

Training to be one of God’s angels on earth!
To become a Stephen Minister, individuals must complete 50 hours of training the
first year, five hours of continued training during the year, and must commit to
two years in the ministry with educator and peer supervision. The training
prepares them to assist individuals with a variety of situations, and to
recognize situations requiring professional care.
After training, Stephen Ministers and the individuals they support are matched
in one-to-one, same-gender, confidential pairs. The Ministers commit to
providing regular and dependable support, usually meeting at least one hour per
week with the individual in need.
The time invested in the ministry has strong rewards, both for care receivers
and care givers.
The class will be held on Monday evenings and will be 2 ½ hours once a week for
20 weeks, the location will alternate between Mount Olympus Presbyterian and
Christ United Methodist Church. Cost is $50 for books.
Contact Betty Sargent or Pastor Steve for an application and interview before
January 12th.

Sandwich Ministry “Lettuce Serve You”
November saw another round of sandwiches served by Mountain Vista UMC to God's
children downtown at St. Vincent DePaul's soup kitchen. I stood by the garbage
can where clients bring their trays and dump them before giving the dirty dishes
to kitchen staff. There was a lot of wasted food. To be honest, the soup that
night was unappealing, some of the desserts were stale, and fruit was bruised.
However, there weren't sandwiches going into that trash can. Your efforts are
much appreciated. To lettuce or not to lettuce? Purely a matter of personal taste, time, and
refrigerator contents. The clients at the center choose 'lettuced' sandwiches if
they are available. However, if the sandwiches are made much before Sunday
evening, the lettuce may not stay fresh enough to serve on Monday. On the other
hand, I have never seen a sandwich go to waste or be passed up because of
lettuce issues

There were 52 people from Mountain Vista UMC and Trinity UMC who overtly
participated in the hosting for Family Promise-Salt Lake at Hilltop House,
November 11-18, 2007. This included not only providing meals and food/necessity
items; they provided themselves to help in any way they felt necessary. Many of
the members of the two churches served in more than one capacity. Several
provided transportation to and from the TRAX station because there was no other
transportation available at the time needed. The food provided was delicious, and the families really enjoyed them all. We
had roasts, pizzas, Enchiladas, spaghetti, and a Russian soup. On Saturday
night, a turkey dinner was served, curtsy of Albertson’s in Riverton via Chris
and Doris. To each of you THANK YOU!
The giving of selves and food provisions, and prayers showed so much of GOD’s

Santa's Cookie Shop:
Another successful Cookie Sale has come and gone with great results despite the
fear that the snow would keep people away! Huge amounts of thanks go out to a
vast number of people that helped in many ways, from making cookies, buying
cookies, contributing crafts, telling friends and co-workers, helping before,
during and after the event. We are at a $2200 profit from cookies, crafts and the quilt going to the
building fund as of Dec. 9 with a little bit more anticipated income from the
quilt drawing on Dec. 16. Special thanks to Jean Ann Nohavec for creating and
donating the quilt. Thanks again to the core group that put this together and
for everyone's participation, make notes of all your favorite recipes for next
year's event!
Dear Friends,
Please find the enclosed check to be designated to the building fund. This gift
is to honor Jean Ann Nohavec and her sewing friends. Specifically, this is to
say "Thank you" for the beautiful quilt they crafted from different shirts I
had. I pray that God continues to bless you all through this Christmas season. Happy

YOUTH Hello everyone!!!
I hope that God blessed your Christmas season and that you built great memories
with your family and friends. I also pray that you are letting God change you
especially around this New Years. We make a new resolution every year to make
ourselves better people but I think God's calling us to a life that involves
constant change and re-commitments. We've been talking a lot with our youth
about what this kind of life looks like. It's been really exciting to see and
hear what God is doing!!! As always, I encourage you to talk to our youth and
ask them what God has been doing.
We have a lot of exciting events coming up this next that I will keep you
informed about. Also our Wednesday service is going strong. I've been getting
calls from some other local youth group leaders that have expressed interest in
attending the Wednesday service to find out how we run the service. This is such
an encouragement because it tells me that God is doing powerful things!! YEEAAHHH!!!!
Also, our confirmation class has started recently and we are open for more kids
always. The class is for first year Jr. High students (6th or 7th graders
depending on the school) Feel free to contact me at any time for any question.
Thanks again everyone for the constant support the youth and myself receive.
GOD BLESS!!

Letter from the Bishop on Walk to Emmaus:
December 14, 2007
Denver Area Clergy
Rocky Mountain Conference
Yellowstone Conference
Dear Friends, With the New Year right around the corner, we along with others in our
congregations often ponder ways to enrich our spiritual journey. I want to
encourage your support and participation in the spiritual renewal movement
called The Walk to Emmaus (for adults) and Chrysalis (for young people). Please
consider attending as participants and then lending your leadership support.
These movements are in need of our support and positive impact. The General Board of Discipleship has worked alongside these movements to
develop a set of Clergy Criteria for leading a weekend Emmaus or Chrysalis
event. The purpose of these criteria is to establish a set of standards and
deepen the partnership between laity and clergy during the event. If you would
like more information about criteria and training please contact Rev. Skip
Strickland (RMC Director of Mission & Ministry) 303-389-9456 or Rev. Bill
Mullette-Bauer (YAC Director of Connectional Ministries) 406-459-0621. The Emmaus or Chrysalis renewal movements work best when the laity and clergy
work in partnership. I hope you will support these programs in your
congregations, with your presence, and your prayers. May the Holy One be present for you this Advent Season while inspiring you to
renewal in the New Year.
Shalom,
Warner H. Brown, Jr.
Resident Bishop
