Pastor's Ponderings....

 "And the Adventure Continues…"

On the worldwide church calendar, known as the "Liturgical Calendar," there are seven Sundays of Easter: Easter Sunday and the six Sundays that follow. Easter is a lifestyle; a foundation for living; not just a day out of the year. Many Christian writers and preachers have called the Christian community of faith "Easter People." We are a people who live and struggle in a hurting world—dealing with the same battles everyone else does—but never giving up on our sure and certain hope that God wins the final victory. Sin does NOT win. Death does NOT have the final word.

Thank you, Easter People, for making it known at home, work, school, community, and wherever you go in the world that "Christ IS Risen! Christ is Risen, Indeed!" God is alive and well in the world and living in YOU.

Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have seen the Lord!"
And she told them that he had said these things to her.
–John 20:18

In Christ,
Pastor Steve

REFLECTIONS

20-20 Vision

"Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand."
Matt. 13:13  NIV

Vision is something that is correctable today. Eye doctors have found ways to correct faulty vision. Thus a vision problem does not necessarily mean that a person is disabled. That person just needs some correction in his/her vision. Seeing is an important part of our lives.

The story is told of a farmer who was to deliver a load of hay to a man who had purchased the hay. The appointed time of the delivery came and went without the hay showing up. The man went to see what had happened to the hay he had purchased. He found the farmer with the load of hay returning to his farm. When asked why he hadn't delivered the hay as promised the farmer replied, "I was going down the road to deliver the hay when I came to a tunnel. I looked at the tunnel and could see that the entry to the tunnel was large enough to pass through, but looking toward the other end of the tunnel it looked too small for the load to get through so I turned around and was going back home. I didn't want to get stuck in the tunnel."

Jesus said he used parables in his teaching because people had ears and didn't hear, eyes and didn't see. Maybe he felt that the parables were something people would remember and contemplate on, eventually gaining some insight into the message he was bringing. Like the farmer failing to deliver the load of hay our vision can be misleading and distorted. What he did not understand was that what he was seeing was an optical illusion. Is our vision distorted at times because we have preconceived ideas of what the answer is? Do we as individuals or as a Church cut ourselves short because we can't see beyond our preconceived ideas? We need to ask God to correct our vision.

                            Peace

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as I forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

This prayer comes from Jesus' teaching found in Matthew 6:9-13 and in Luke 11:2-4.

I realize that there have been times when I said this prayer and it was just words, that I hadn't engaged my heart or mind in the prayer. Over the next few months I would like to focus each month on a different portion of this prayer that Jesus taught us to pray with the hopes that the prayer would become as meaningful to each of us as it was to Jesus Christ.

Who Art in Heaven- What is meant by Heaven? Where is Heaven?
The Greek Word for heaven is "Ouranos." It has three different meanings; it means air, sky and the farthest reaches of the universe. So, Heaven is all of these things. One of my favorite songs is titled "Breathe" by Michael Smith. This song was actually inspired by the Lord's Prayer.

Here are the lyrics:

"This is the air I breathe
This is the air I breathe
Your holy presence living in me

This is my daily bread
This is my daily bread
Your very word spoken to me"

What Jesus is saying in the Lord's prayer is that God is as close as the air that you breath. God is looking over you from the heavens in the sky that we can see and that God is ruling over you from the Cosmos as far out as we can imagine.

Psalm 139 captures it this way:

I can never escape from your Spirit!
I can never get away from your presence!
If I go up to heaven, you are there;
If I go down to the grave, you are there.
If I ride the wings of the morning,
If I dwell by the farthest oceans,
even there your hand will guide me,
and your strength will support me.

Heaven is WHERE EVER YOU and GOD ARE! You can't run from God, you can't hide from God; you cannot go somewhere God is not. Even when you walk through the valley of the shadow of death God is there.

In a sense we can wallow in heaven as we acknowledge and live in the presence of God. I agree with N.T. Wright, one of the most interesting New Testament writers alive today when he states:

"Jesus' resurrection is the beginning of God's new project, not to snatch people away from earth to heaven, but to colonize earth with the life of heaven. That, after all, is what the Lord's Prayer is about."

See you in church,
Grace and Peace- deb

We also need people to set up and take down the performance backdrop and props at the LDS church on Saturday, May 17 after the show and set it up at Mountain Vista for the matinee the next day.

We still need sound people to work mics and LCD projector at all performances as well as lighting. There are only two people on each of those committees.

Mission Trips:
Blankets for Africa

Lorraine Wilkinson’s daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Art Milliman, are joining a medical group who will serve 10 days in a hospital in Kenya. A flyer, with more details, is on the bulletin board. The group will leave in November 2008.

Lorraine is making humanitarian blankets for the babies and children and invites others to participate. Humanitarian blankets are very simple and are being made in two sizes.

Small size: 1yard. Cotton top, 4 oz filler, 1yd flannel – sandwich together and tie. They can be stitched together like a pillow case, turned and stitched closed.

Large size: 1 ½ yd. Made the same as above.

They need to be turned in by the middle of July for packing and shipping August 1.

Monetary donations are also appreciated as each volunteer must raise nearly $3,000, which covers air fare, ground transportation, lodging and meals.

Thank you!

Love Fund – Provides one time assistance for families and individuals in need.
During March the Love Fund provided food pantry and transportation assistance for two families and heating assistance for one family. Thank you for your generous support so that we can reach out to others in need.

LOVE FUND IN ACTION
It started in the usual way - a phone call asking for assistance – a single mother with four children. Could we help with gas or fresh produce, especially fresh meat? I told her I would meet her at a gas station close to where she lives and fill her car.

After a short chat, I decided t stop at the market also – for the usual, some meat, eggs, milk, butter, cheese, bread, etc., which I did not mention to the woman. When I arrived at the gas station, the children were playing quietly at the side of the car. The mother and I introduced ourselves. The oldest boy (10) came over and shook my hand and thanked me for helping them. The next two boys did the same thing –much to my amazement. Then the little girl came and gave me a hug around my knees.

I asked the mother to open the trunk of her car as I had groceries in my trunk. She was most appreciative. The children quickly transferred the food – never peaking to see what was in the bags and no complaining but willing helpers. I never heard the mother say anything to them about helping – they just pitched in. You could feel the love in this special family unit.

Then I told the mother to pull up to a pump for gas. While it was filling, I remembered some little bags of candy that I had. I asked the mother if it was alright to give it to her children. She said that would be very nice and thanked me.

I offered a bag to the boy I the front seat whose window was open. Thank you was the quick reply. The little girl’s head popped up beside her brother. I gave her one and she could see I had two more bags. She asked if she could give them to her other brothers – after saying “thank you.” I went inside to pay for the gas. When I cam out, the little girl was standing by the driver’s door, using her teeth to try to open her bag of candy. I offered to help and received a “yes, please.” I opened it and handed it back. Before she had any, she turned and offered it to her mother. Very touching to witness! Soon the whole family was there giving me hugs and thank you’s. Then the piled into the car and drove away. I am the one who received a unique blessing, thanks to our Love Fund.

Project Linus
Happy March - can't you just feel the beginnings of spring. I know you are as glad as I am, I can actually see most of the new bushes I planted on the north side of my house last summer - finally!

A heartfelt thank you to Carol and Larry Holmes, owners of KIJODA Sales, who have generously offered to fund the shipping costs of the blankets for Camp Good Grief. Thank you, KIJODA Sales.

Thank you to all of you who donate blankets anonymously. The children appreciate all the gorgeous, cuddly, wonderfully made blankets you have donated.

I received a really cute blanket this past month and thought I'd pass along the idea. It was a piece of pink fleece backed by a piece of pink print flannel. The two pieces were stitched together about 2" from the edge, then 1" fringe was cut into the edges. After the blanket was washed the flannel raveled just slightly and made a great edging. I imagine colorful combinations could make some really fun blankets.

Remember we're collecting red, white, blue and any combination of those colors, blankets for Camp Good Grief in May. We have 12 so far! Lastly, we have added several new locations for the blanket deliveries: Shriner's Hospital for Children, Family Support Services in Sugarhouse and Cornerstone Counseling. You've been so generous and we are able to keep adding agencies to our list of deliveries - WHAT A GREAT GROUP!

Thank you so much for the wonderful blankets from Mountain Vista. You are a creative group and the children who receive your blankets will love them!

From my heart to yours - THANKS!    Kathy

YOUTH

Hello Mt Vista!

I hope that all is well with you and you are discovering God in new and exciting ways. I have a strong feeling that our youth have!! We have been doing some pretty intense studies. Lately we have been talking about what it means to be crucified with Christ as it says in Galatians 2:20: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

This has been a topic that has brought up a lot of good questions and good conversation in our Sunday school classes and our Wednesday night meetings. We are studying right now what does it mean to truly accept the grace God has for us and what that looks like in our every day lives.

We have also been doing some fun stuff as well. We recently went bowling and have planned to go to Laser Quest in the near future. We also recently played at boondocks for 6 hours straight!! There was a lot of go kart racing but only one champion. I think all the you know who that is. There will be a lot of camp and mission options for the summer and I'm excited to give you more specific information about those in the near future.

We have numerous options for youth involvement:

BROADWAY!

But Wait!  There's More!  More Details About "Set Sail for Broadway."

Mountain Vista United Methodist Church's Broadway production is just around the corner, and we are ready to "Float Your Boat!" See Steven Woodward play Captain Shipley on the U.S.S. Atlantic Atlantis. Your cruise director, Judy, will be performed by Linda Hartney. Clarence Strohn will be our lead man, ace reporter, Robert Roper. Making her first appearance in a Mountain Vista Broadway production is Aime Schicker as Lucy, the young woman on the cruise with her eccentric Aunt Claire wonderfully acted by Cindie Selbo. On board, you'll spend time with other passengers in the ship's lounge, "Hernando's Hidaway." Hernando (Scott Moulton, another first time in our show) will be behind the bar and Sam (Pastor Steve) will be behind the piano.

EMAIL:
Comcast has fixed their problem with our emails.
If you stopped receiving church emails (especially Comcast customers):

Check your "Screened Mail", “Junk”, “Bulk” or “Spam” folder. It's a special kind of "in-box" for incoming emails that seem to meet their "spam" criteria. It stays there for a few days and then is automatically deleted. You can access all email in this folder as long as it has not been automatically deleted.

You can also mark any email in the Screened Mail box "This is not spam" to let them know that future email from that sender can be put in my normal in box.

Thank you!

Facility Use Forms are located in the bin outside the office door. Please fill the forms out completely and turn them in to the office to help us plan building use. Please be courteous of other groups using the church and only use the room and time that you have reserved.
