Pastor's Ponderings....
"Love Stings"
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you
may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and
the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those
who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing
that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others?
Do not even pagans do that?
—Matthew 5:43-47.
In Sufism, a mystic tradition of Islam, the story is told of a Sufi who stopped
to rest by a flooding riverbed. As the rushing waters rose, the Sufi noticed a
scorpion struggling precariously on a low-hanging branch of one of the trees
that lined the creek.
Realizing the scorpion, left to its own efforts, would surely drown, the Sufi
reached out his hand to the stranded scorpion. But the scorpion stung him. Still
the Sufi reached out his hand over and over and the scorpion stung him again and
again.
"Sufi," said a passerby, "Don't you realize that if you touch that scorpion it
will sting you?"
The Sufi replied as he reached out for the scorpion one more time, "Ah, so it
is, my friend. But just because it is the scorpion's nature to sting does not
mean that I should abandon my nature to save."
Sometimes it hurts to continue to love someone who will not love us back. The
kind of love that expects nothing in return—and may get only pain in return—is
the authentic, unconditional love of God's grace flowing through us.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Steve
REFLECTIONS
Where'd He Go?
Mark 16:1-7 NIV
The current trend in our Christian belief system is that it
is not necessary to believe in the Resurrection in order to believe in God’s
plan of salvation. Somehow, in my humble opinion, this seems to take the very
heart out of the message of the Gospel. If Jesus did not conquer death then what
hope do I have as a mere mortal? This is not "pie in the sky" theology. I'm
seeing it as essential to the understanding of God's plan of salvation for us.
Built on hope? YES! Looking to the future? YES!
Worshiping a god who is limited by the laws of nature and can be considered
equal only to other great leaders of history leaves me with a feeling of, "Why
bother" if there is no resurrection? What hope can I have if I am worshiping
ossified bones in a box? I watch the sun come up over the mountains, the sky
turn brilliant colors, the order of the universe, the rainbow after the rain and
I can't help but believe that God is still in charge and that the Resurrection
is testimony to his faithfulness.
YES, I believe in the Resurrection and I need the Resurrection to bolster my
faith. I don't need to ask, "WHERE’D HE GO?" He is right where he said he would
be, he is with our Heavenly Father. Don't forget His promise, "I go to prepare a
place for you."
He's not lost, He's getting a place ready for us.
Peace,
Duane
I have asked the men in the Saturday morning Men's Group to
write about what the Easter experience means to them. The following are the
articles that were submitted. My thanks to them for their work.
Easter is a time for celebration when all Christians come together to
celebrate the gift of salvation. It is the start of a new covenant between God
and his people. God gave all Christians His Son Jesus as our sacrificial lamb,
who was sacrificed on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins past, present
and future. Three days after the sacrifice that ended all sacrifices Jesus rose
from the grave and ascended into heaven. The resurrection of Jesus signifies to
me the promise of life after the grave. The fact that sin is death and that sin
died on the cross that Friday and the Son of God rose above death and gave
everlasting life to all who believe in him. Easter means to me that I, as a
Christian who has placed my faith in God, knows that I have been forgiven and I
will rise above sin to spend eternity with God the father.

Lay Leader Letter Hello Church
Family,
Grace and peace to you in the name of Christ Jesus. In the last couple months
many people have talked to me about Missionaries from another church coming to
them. Some met them in parking lots, some in their yards or homes. Two young men
wearing black suits called on some women who lived alone and it was to say the
least intimidating when they wouldn't leave when asked. I visited with some
leaders of this church about this being scary for some people. I am still
waiting for a response.
My turn came the other day. I was working on my bike and this young man came
right in to my garage. I was routing some cables on the carburetor holding some
small parts pretty focused on the task at hand. "Hi I'm Elder Blah Blah Blah."
He wanted to tell me about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What he told me was
different from what we teach people so I had to stop him. I grabbed me Bible out
of the truck and started to share with him. We started with 1 Corinthians
15:3-8, went to Romans 5:8-11 and 1 Peter 2: 21-25. Then his partner told me I
what I needed to do I had to stop him because it was different from the Bible
and what we teach. I still had my Bible (it was one of those paper backs we give
out; mine has Duct tape on the cover cause I use a lot it at work) so I shared
some stuff. I read Acts 16:29-34, then John 6:26-29. They smiled and nodded a
lot. They told me about the great apostasy, still with my Bible we went to
Matthew 16:13-20 and then to Mt 28:20. We talked about history of the Church and
the history their church. We didn't have the same history teacher I guess it was
sure different. They told me that Christians don't agree and we don't have any
unity. I told them about Family Promise (formerly Salt Lake Interfaith) and
people from all faiths working together. I told them how Methodists, Baptists
Evangelical Free, Lutheran and Roman Catholic's all got together at retreats
like Walk to Emmaus and Via de Cristo and praised God together. I talked about
our choir touring at different Church's. I don't think they liked that they just
kept telling me "you all don't agree on this or that" and I couldn't say much
more.
I had to go; we had been together more than an hour. They left and I left to
go get the kids. I think they were as frustrated as I was. Later I read
Colossians 1:13-20 (I wished I had shared that) God is preached and I read the
Book of Discipline. I read the part on Doctrinal Standards titled The Church it
says "We believe the Christian Church is the community of all true believers
under the Lordship of Christ. We believe it is one, holy, apostolic and
catholic. It is the redemptive fellowship in which the Word of God preached... I
wanted to build bridges with these young men but it seemed difficult. We left
knowing don't have the kind of relationship that we wanted to sincerely trust
the other persons beliefs. We have differences that are very obvious. We also
have things we share in common.
So I ask you what are differences you see between Mountain Vista and other
church's and most importantly what do we have in common with other church's.
My response is this "we don't believe we have the market cornered on God we see
the Spirit working in other places (example Pastor Steve was asked to be a
Spiritual Director for a Lutheran retreat, cool huh!) we aren't the only church
we are part of the true Church.
Oh yeah that's my answer to both questions.

AUCTION
Saturday,
May 5, 7:00 p.m.
Delectable Desserts and Fabulous Fun!
Mark you calendar and invite your friends and neighbors to our biennial
Auction and Gala event on Saturday, May 5, at 7 p.m., at the church. It's FREE
and offers you an evening of great fun and sensational sweets. But bring your
wallet because there will be many items, large and small for which you'll want
to make a bid.
In order to make this year's auction the best it can be, we need a lot of help
from the congregation and the community. Here are some ways you can help…
1. Provide Items to be Auctioned. Your donation, regardless of size, will help
us meet our auction goals. It can also be a lot of fun. We are looking for new
items to auction, gift baskets, tickets to events, frequent flyer miles, sports
memorabilia, dinners, antiques, vacation packages/time shares, crafts and other
unique items.
2. Provide a Dessert. We plan to have a big grazing table filled with delectable
desserts donated by members of the congregation.
3. Asking Businesses for Donations. Committee members are planning to actively
solicit the support of local businesses by asking for donations. If you have a
local business that you think might like to provide a donation, we would love to
have your help. Contact Peggy Porter.
***The cut off date for Auction Donations is April 28, because we need time to
catalog them and get them ready for the auction.***
If you have questions, ask someone on the Auction Committee.

for tonight. I understand Geniel has been coordinating
meals and we can't tell you how much it has helped. Debi graciously came to the
hospital to visit and pray with us, and Joni sent Mary some beautiful flowers.
We have truly felt love and concern from our church family. Thanks to everyone

We are very grateful for your recent financial donation to Crossroads Urban
Center. We depend on gifts such as yours to sustain our work.
We received a donation to Crossroads Urban Center from the congregation of
Mountain Vista United Methodist Church in February of $285.
Your gifts are translated into food, clothing, emergency assistance, advocacy,
and other support for low income Utahns. Our work is predominately funded
through private donations.
Thanks again for supporting Crossroads Urban Center as we begin our fifth decade
of service.
Sincerely yours,
Glenn L. Bailey

YOUTH Hey
everyone!!
Jason here. God is so good!! I'm really excited for what's been going on
recently and what's coming up in the future. The next event that we will be
having is a lock-in for the youth on April 20th (Friday). We will be meeting at
Mountain Vista at 8:00 p.m. and dedicate the night towards watching the entire
Lord of the Rings movies. Each movie is about 4 hours so we this be about a 12
hour event. We will also have some board games and card games for kids who want
to come and just hang out. We want to encourage as many youth as possible to
attend. This will be a great night of gathering and fellowship. Sometimes just
playing with each other is essential.
As the summer months come close, we will be focusing our Tuesday youth night
(Identity) towards fellowship. We will spend lots of our summer weeks going to
parks, movies, and other fun stuff. However until the summer, we will be diving
into lessons subjects such as:
1. Praise and Worship
2. Trials and Suffering
3. Discipleship
4. Wholeness and Holiness
Also I just want to let you know about the upcoming camp during the summer. We
are gearing up for traveling to Flathead Lake, Montana for camp. This is a
gorgeous camp right on the lake. We will be joining up with Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church (Sandy) and Our Savior's Lutheran Church (Holladay) just as we
did with our most recent retreat to Camp Utaba. So if you're interested in going
up to big sky country, we will have registration forms for you. Last year the
camp cost about $340. I'm pretty sure it will be that same price. We want to
make clear that we don't want money to be an obstacle for this retreat; if God
wants you there we will do our best to get you there. We are trying to currently
plan activities to raise money for our youth group and make retreats and other
events cheaper for your kids.
I will continue to send e-mails for you parents. If you have not received any
e-mails from me in the past month or two, I might just not have a current e-mail
address for you. You can send them to J_Train007@hotmail.com (yes I was in 7th
grade when I created this address). Thank all of you so much for your continued
prayers and support for this youth group. It is so inspiring to share the vision
that Jesus has for this youth group with you.
Take care and God Bless!!!!

August 2-5, 2007 Young Men's Flight
August 9-12, 2007 Young Women's Flight
"Chrysalis" is the name chosen for the youth and young adult version of The Walk
to Emmaus.
Chrysalis "Flights" (for 15-18 year olds) are three-day events. This three-day
spiritual renewal time provides an opportunity for you to learn more about
faith, to experience Christian love and support, and to make new faith
commitments. The point is to inspire, challenge and equip you for a closer
friendship with Christ and for Christian action at home, church, school, and
community.
Chrysalis lifts up a way for you to enjoy Christ's friendship and love and to be
Christ's friend and partner in the world. The three days focus on God's grace,
your experience with Christ as friend, what it means to be the body of Christ,
and giving love to a needy world.
Space is limited, applications in the church office.
